How many Kanji do you know? If you're like me, you haven't studied them in order so you don't know the answer for sure. Try the Kanji level check at MLC. http://www.mlcjapanese.co.jp/LevelCheck/Kanji/01.htm
My results were 1200-1300 characters. Sounds about right.
